Currents of Love, originally envisioned as River Lee’s second EP, has now transformed into a special 12-track predominantly acoustic album that will be released on May 23, 2025, in celebration of World Pride 2025 and Gay Pride Month. This release date holds deep personal significance for River, as it marks the birthdate of his late maternal grandmother, to whom he was especially close. River fondly remembers the lessons she shared with him and her 12 other grandchildren, always encouraging them to live their lives as authentically as possible, no matter the circumstances. It is in her honor that this album is being released.
Stripped back to its most raw and intimate form, "Currents of Love" celebrates the power of love, identity, and freedom. Through heartfelt melodies and poignant storytelling, River Lee invites listeners to join him on a journey of self-acceptance, pride, and unapologetic authenticity. The album features the empowering anthem “Out in the Open,” a bold declaration of living life without fear, as well as "Sing My Truth,” which reflects River’s personal journey of finding and embracing his truth.
With a blend of folk, country, and indie influences, "Currents of Love" showcases River’s deep connection to his roots while embracing the beauty of being unapologetically himself. The 12 tracks on this album represent River’s growth, his commitment to authenticity, and his dedication to the love that fuels his spirit.
Story Behind the Albums Creation/Inspiration
When I first started making music, I knew I was stepping into a space where people like me weren’t often seen. Being a gay black artist in country and folk-inspired music comes with its challenges, but it also comes with an incredible sense of purpose. That’s why releasing "Currents of Love" for World Pride 2025 and Gay Pride Month isn’t just about putting out new music; it’s about representation, about making space where there hasn’t always been room, and about standing proud in who I am.
One of the songs on this album, "Out in the Open," is a track that means the world to me. I wrote it years ago, back in college, not long after coming out to my friends and family. At the time, it was my way of processing everything; my fears, my hopes, the overwhelming freedom of finally living as my true self. I never imagined then that one day, this song would become the centerpiece of an actualized album of mine, let alone the way I’d come out to all my current and future fans. But as I put together "Currents of Love", I knew this was the perfect moment. This album is my love letter to authenticity, to joy, to the power of standing tall in who you are.
"Sing My Truth" is another song that came from that same place of reflection and pride. It’s about owning your voice, even when it shakes. It’s about the journey of self-acceptance, about finding a home within yourself. Every track on this album tells a piece of my story, and my hope is that it resonates with anyone who’s ever felt unseen, unheard, or out of place in the spaces they love.
Music has always been about storytelling, and with "Currents of Love", I’m telling mine fully, honestly, and without hesitation. If even one person listens and feels a little less alone, a little prouder, then this project has done what I hoped it would.
Happy Pride. 🌈🎶

To my late grandmother, Jo Anne Carroll, who always taught me to live my truth, to love without fear, and to never hide who I am. This album is for her, and for everyone who has been afraid to live out loud.
